ETF & Index Fund Basics: The Best Tool for Ordinary Investors

Lesson 2 of the Fund Strategy knowledge supplement. Maps to the email’s ”🔲 ETF Grid” and “ETF DCA Matrix” sections — first understand the ETF itself.

If you learn only one instrument, learn the ETF (exchange-traded fund).

1. Index fund vs ETF

  • Index fund: passively tracks an index (e.g. CSI 300) — “buy a basket in one click”, diversifying single-stock blow-up risk.
  • ETF: the exchange-traded version of an index fund — traded in your stock account in real time, lower fees, more transparent, live pricing.

In short: an ETF is the upgraded index fund, friendliest to retail.

2. Four ETF families

TypeExampleTrait
BroadCSI300 ETF (510300), CSI A500 ETF (563360)Whole-market, moderate vol, DCA first choice
SectorSemi / Pharma / Military ETFBet a theme, higher vol, satellite sleeve
CommodityGold ETF (518880)Tracks gold, hedge + inflation
Cross-borderNasdaq100 ETF (159501), S&P500 ETF (159655)Overseas, watch premium & quota

3. How to pick a good ETF?

Four hard metrics, by priority:

  1. Fees: management + custody, broad ETFs often < 0.2%/yr — lower compounds in your favor;
  2. Tracking error: smaller is better;
  3. Scale & liquidity: bigger scale, higher daily turnover → tighter spreads, easier to exit;
  4. History: 5+ years listed, consistently making new highs → steadier.

4. Why best for ordinary people?

  • No need to study individual financials;
  • Low fees, far cheaper than active funds long-term;
  • Up over time (the economy grows) but volatile mid-way — exactly where DCA + grid turn volatility into an edge.

5. Two must-watch risks

  • Premium / discount: common in cross-border ETFs; price may exceed (premium) or fall below (discount) NAV. Check IOPV before buying — skip if premium > 3%;
  • Quota / FX: QDII types have FX quotas; when exhausted, subscriptions pause and premium spikes.

Remember: an ETF is a tool — profits come from disciplined use (DCA base, grid enhancement, high-dividend ballast), not from predicting its direction.
